Good Will
Hunting

We can't support every good cause in Scotland. But we've no chance of supporting them if we don't know about them. Tell us who's doing something brilliant.

Not just charities. Any worthwhile Scottish initiative that's underfunded and doing real good. Community projects, local clubs, volunteer-run efforts, overlooked causes that deserve recognition.

William Shaw Sheret MBE

The son of a Glasgow coalman, Willie is one of Scottish showjumping's most loved and respected equestrians. He first competed at the age of thirteen, and his career took flight when he represented the army across Europe in the years just after the Second World War. He went on to win the Foxhunter Championship in 1975 at the Horse of the Year Show on St Corry, and has trained horses that competed at the Olympic Games. He continued to compete until he was seventy.

In 2005, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II awarded Willie an MBE for Service to Showjumping in Scotland. He is also the Honorary Vice President of British ShowJumping's Scottish Branch. Over seventy-five years in the sport — and still giving back.

But it's as a teacher that Willie is best known. His friendly, empowering coaching style has helped literally hundreds of showjumpers — young and old, novice and experienced — develop their talents far beyond their own expectations. He turned up. He taught. He made people better.

Good Will Hunting is named for him — and for every person in every community across Scotland who sees what needs doing and gets on with it.
